SUB STUDIO INFORMATION

Sub is located at La Trobe University in Bundoora in the northern suburbs of Melbourne.

We offer both analogue and/or digital recording. The analogue tape recorder is a 16 track 1 inch Tascam ATR-60 machine and the digital system is a 24 I/O RME/Samplitude system.

My latest projects have been with The Crayon Fields, Riff Random, new band Mission Control, The Fit and Summer Cats.

While I work a lot with bands the studio is open for any and all recording services and music from any genre - I welcome your project. I've recorded solo acoustic artists, traditional and spiritual music, bagpipes, harmoniums, tablas, African gospel singers, classical orchestrations, CDs for mum's birthday, karaoke, voice overs, meditation albums, radio plays, podcasts, interviews, lectures, film soundtracks and advertisements. I've done cheap budget demos, 5 hour improvised sets, polished studio productions, compilations, albums that have taken over a year to make and sessions that are done in 40 minutes.

The studio rate is a flat $30 per hour for all projects.

The Studio. Sub is a little unusual. It hits above its weight in terms of experience and audio quality but is situated in your not-so-standard studio aesthetic. The studio has a control room 4m x 2m and a 6m x 3m treated studio. The studio is situated above a large open hall which is used for university graduations, this space provides a unique acoustic which a lot of bands find attractive and you're certainly not going to get that in your regular studio environment. Generally I'll record drums on the balcony with the bass in the treated room and the guitar in another adjoining room with baffles. Musos will all be on the balcony with line of site and the amps will be isolated. There's plenty of room for guide vocals and keys on the balcony. The rest of the tracking is done in the studio or on the balcony if you want the natural reverb.

La Trobe is a particularly attractive campus revegetated with natives from a vacant paddock around 40 years ago. It's a pretty relaxed environment. The studio has a kitchen and 20 acres of outside area if you want to have a ciggy. It's probably best to bring your lunch if you're having a long session otherwise the shops are ten minutes away.
